“I remember reading a chapter from my English textbook in std. 6 about an Indian veterinarian who operated upon a white tiger from the Mumbai Zoo, and that is when I was first introduced to the concept of veterinary sciences. I knew back then that I wanted to become a veterinarian” says Dr. Nitya Nirodi-Manjure, from our Mumbai branch.
Having completed her B.V. Sc from Bombay Veterinary College in 2013 and M.V. Sc in 2015 in Surgery and Radiology from Nagpur Veterinary College, she worked with a local clinic in Mumbai for about 6 months before joining Cessna Lifeline in 2016. After a year of working in Bengaluru, she moved to Crown Vet, Mumbai where she spent almost 2 years, before resuming work with Cessna Lifeline, Mumbai in 2020.
Not only did the story from school inspire Dr. Nitya, but also reading books by Dr. James Herriot, renowned veterinarian helped further her dream. “I was also always fond of animals which is unusual because my family isn’t, so they were surprised at my decision (to become a vet)” she says.
When talking about the veterinary practice in India, Dr. Nitya says she is very happy with the scope she sees now, even though it still is in the nascent stages, this sort of growth would have been unheard of even 5-7 years ago let alone when she was a child.
“We still have a long way to go, but with the exposure we are getting to the western standards, we will grow as well”
Dr. Nitya would also like to see a decrease in the disparity for medical treatment between domesticated pets and stray animals.
Dr. Nitya says the clientele in the past 8 months in Navi Mumbai has been extremely supportive and encouraging, considering such a facility is not common in this area.
In her free time, Dr. Nitya loves to bake and says it decompresses her.
